As a medical assistant, you will be performing many medical duties as well as being responsible for numerous office administrative tasks. You will be expected to answer phones and make appointments, complete insurance forms and deal with insurance companies, update and maintain patient files, greet patients, assist with billing, take vital signs, explain medical procedures, prepare patients for exams and arrange lab tests. These are just a few of the duties you will be asked to perform.
Getting the right training will prepare you to perform most of the tasks you'll need to do as a medical assistant. In addition, you will get hands-on experience and additional training in the office where you work. Most assistant schools offer one-year certificates and/or two-year associate's degrees. This training is provided at local community colleges and trade schools. There are even some online courses that you can take at home at your convenience.
Some of the courses you will be taking in a medical assistant program are medical terminology, insurance forms and billing, anatomy, accounting, psychology, physiology, diagnostics, lab work, pharmacy information and basic first aid. Many schools offer internship programs for students so that they get first-hand experience in a real medical setting.
Jobs for a medical assistant are available if you are well-trained and ready to go. If you are a goal-driven person, you might want to do some volunteer work while you are attending school. This not only gives you the extra experience you need but also looks wonderful on that all-important resume!
